There are certain things that “successful students” do that others do not. This is not to say that if you do not do these things you are not a good student, these are simply likely signs that someone is a good student and cares about their grades, opposed to those who don’t care at all.
Here are a few of the signs you may be a good, successful student. If you’re struggling, keep these in mind and try to incorporate each into your life as you go.
1.TAG – Time Alone with God. Bible college can be one of the easiest places to grow cold in your relationship with Christ. You are in worship and chapels consistently. Classes and discussions revolve around Bible reading and discussion; and you will be around Christians all day long. WARNING: none of this can take the place of your personal time alone in the presence of God.
2.Go To Class – You will hear stories of students who only went to class three times: the first day, mid-term day and final exam day and still attained a passing grade. However, these students were robbed! They were robbed of the true education that happens only for those who attend the classes and they were robbed because they paid money for a product they did not receive. Going to class is a big distinguishing factor between successful students and those who don’t care.
3.Take Notes & Buy The CD’s - Whether you want to admit it or not, you do not have a perfect memory. Taking notes in class will help you pay attention, stay awake and remember the lecture weeks down the road at exam time. Some instructors move through material really fast. At VBC all of our classes are recorded and you can buy the CD’s in the bookstore. Purchasing the recorded classes will not only help you prepare for exams, they remain a valuable resource for years to come.
4.Ask for Help! - Sometimes you have to accept the fact that you are doing poorly or struggling in a class. It’s at that point that you need to talk to your instructor. Most instructors love to help you if you talk to them or make an appointment to see them. WARNING: Don’t expect an instructor to know when your in trouble or need help.
5.Read and Write ASAP – As soon as reading or essay assignments are given create a plan and get started right away. If you are assigned 100 pages to read for the quarter decide how many pages you will read each day/evening and begin at the first of the quarter or as soon as the assignment is given (the same strategy works for writing papers). It is much easier to read 5 pages a day or write 1 paragraph every evening than procrastinating until a day or two before the assignment is due and then cramming! NOTE: This strategy also works very well for exam preparation.
Show you care about your grade (don’t just complain about it), and get through it while keeping a great attitude. Think about these five things and picture someone in one of your classes that fits this model of a good student. Then model their example.
